Once again, this one is pretty easy and I chose it specifically for its interesting history. It was a collaboration between two famous companies, one of which is pretty surprising.
I still have that game in the box. It’s Battletech: The Crescent Hawk’s Inception. Published by Infocom and developed by Westwood Studios.
It was interesting because almost every title that Infocom had were text adventures.
That was a pretty decent game for the time. I think I was 12 when I got it. The banking system on it was pretty neat and you could salvage enemy mechs. I recall making new mechs out of salvaged parts.
One funny bit of trivia is that if you pirated the game, it punished you at the very very end of the game: one of the endgame bits required the starmap from the box =)
Sol: Aw, I was gonna mention that! It actually took me and a friend a while to finish the game even though we had a legal copy because we didn’t notice that some of the stars on the starmap were highlighted.
My first introduction to Battletech was the CGI cartoon, which I hear is actually not that great, but I loved it. Then I read a few Battletech books a friend lent to me, and they dealt with some adult issues I wasn’t expecting.
But I’ve never played anything outside of Mechwarrior for the SNES and Mechwarrior 4 for the PC when a coworker got it new.
I only played Crescent Hawk’s Revenge, the sequel to this game, but I loved it. It was my introduction to the Batteltech universe, and I played MW, MW2 and then Mech Commander. Sadly, there hasn’t been a good Battletech title after FASA got bought by Microsoft. Mech Assault on the XBOX was an absolute low 🙁
I hear Jordan Weisman has acquired a license for the FASA games, and is working on something secret. I keep my fingers crossed.
I just remembered that I got a chance to play the in the Battletech pods at Dave and Buster’s a few years back. I believe they are gone now. Before Dave and Buster’s, they used to be at North Pier in Chicago. You used to have to get a player card, and it was much more strategic. As a friend once commented, “Once it got to D&B’s, it became a glorified arcade game.”
There are quite big MMO campaigns simulating the classic BattleTech still running. Just google a little if your interested, I played there a while and really liked it.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. 🙂
Yep, have the box, loved the game.

The sequel went real-time; didn’t like it at all.
Andrew77: You are correct, sir!
