I posted a link to my last blogpost on the Gibbage Forums.
I have since learned not to ask Brit gamers if they want someone to make a Dungeon Keeper clone. Just assume that the answer is ‘yes’.
I think a Dungeon Keeper-style game will be a good way to break into 3D, and once its done the engine will be easily adaptable to more complex 3D games like Inaria 3D, so Dungeon Keeper in 40 hours is the winner!
3D is awful tough. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. Do you have a preference of DirectX or OpenGL? Comfortable with either? Will you be using an engine like Ogre3D or Irrlicht, or will you develop your own? Just a few things to consider. And beyond that, so much time goes into modeling and animating.
It’ll be 100% my own code. It’ll almost certainly be DirectX. All graphics will be ripped from other games (which means I won’t be able to sell it, but I never intended to anyway). The engine will be a heightfield/billboard combination, which is actually pretty darn easy to code.
w00t! I have Dungeon Keeper 2, and I have played Evil Genious. Both are great fun. I can’t wait to see what you come up with. B-)
Will you use the Dungeon Keeper setting (typical fantasy themes)? Or will you branch out like Evil Genius did?
I think you should still make the game 3D-ish, at least in so far as Hit & Myth was 3D. It’s not actually 3D, but the walls have perspective, which is nice.
See my next post 🙂
A DK1-clone is already in progress. Ask IKSLM on Keeper Klan Forum or on Dungeon-Keeper.net forum !
Hey, I want to play this!
