Okay, I’d been getting this a fair amount after getting a Windows 7 box. I’d install an older game, like Dungeon Keeper or Populous: The Beginning and I’d get very strange colors, sometimes just in the menus but sometimes in the game itself. Annoying, but hey, they’re older games.
Then I reinstalled Starcraft, and the same thing happened.
Now, Starcraft is probably the most reliable piece of software ever written, and watching it come up in psychedelia was painful. I knew there had to be a solution. And there is.
In Vista, right-click your desktop and choose “Personalize” from the resulting menu. In Windows 7, right-click your desktop and choose “Screen Resolution”.
Don’t do anything in these screens; just leave them up.
Run your game. Your colors will be fixed.
I’m serious. And I don’t make ’em, I just report ’em.
Over a year later, and this is still good info. Crazy.
For the record, I used this fix for “Warlords III – Darklords Rising” and so far is working quite well. I can now save games, exit to the desktop and when I reload the saved game, all colors are working.
I tried this fix on Warlords III – Darklords Rising” as well, on Windows 7 Home Premium. It didn’t work for me.
I’m stunned. I was having issues with Populous. This fix still works for old games. Great find!
What a wacky fix! It worked on the old XCOM game, thanks!
Unbelievable. But it worked! Thanks a bunch!
Hilarious! I’ve looked through dozens of populous forums, including populous resurrection project, and yet the only working solution is found here and it’s as simple as unexpected, thank you.
amazing yeah! I love populous but the colours were crazy, your tip apppears to have fixed everything! Thanks!
For Populous: download “Pop Enhance” instead. It fixes the game UI sprites as well as the colours.
Most links to it on the web are dead, if you are having trouble, try getting it from here: http://popre.net/forum/populous-the-beginning-software-patches-t9537.html
just download Populous and are having color/pixel issues. Im running Windows 7, I right-clicked my desktop and chose “Screen Resolution”.
Didn’t do anything in these screens; just left them up.
Rann the game. But the colors weren’t fixed.
