This is Heavy Gear, developed and published by Activision in 1997, although it was almost 1998 if I rememebr correctly. I remember getting this game mixed up with G-Nome, and thinking it was terrible.
I played it a while back on a system that did not have a numpad, so I couldn’t really get into it, now I have been looking for my copy for a while… that is why I recognized it right away!
I was going to guess G-Nome as well – awful game, but it had the cool feature of being able to hop out of your mech and walk around outside. Other than Mechwarrior Mercs (and a demo of G-Nome), I never did any of the mech sim games.

Correctamundo! Can you tell me what board game it was based off of? (Hint: the answer is pretty darn obvious.)
Battletech? Thats just a guess, but it seems the most obvious answer.
Nope, I was wrong. According to wikipedia, Heavy Gear is its own tabletop wargame, Cardgame, and cartoon series.
(…now I really want to find my copy of this game!)
Couldn’t pass on the Terra Nova reference!
There was a game with a landscape engine that fuelled the imagination. Views into the distance for miles, lakes… terra indeed!
Only surpassed by Outcast’s voxel engine when it came out, imo.
Glad I was a bit late to the party, almost mistook the screenie for Mechwarrior III.
