I’ve kind of held myself back from throwing a lot of particles and such around in Inaria because I wanted to maintain a “classical” look, but now that the game is nearly done, it just looks kind of…sterile. Yes, compared to modern games classic games looked blah de blah.
The question I’m asking is a simple one. Would modern effects, like particles and possibly fog of war that used lighting effects, hurt Inaria? Or help it?
I’m a big fan of particle blood effects wherever they can be applied. They add satisfying weight to any combat situation.
Here is my humble opinion. Stick to your theme. Inaria has always been designed from an early CRPG point of view. To keep that feel, I would limit the special effects. I can see a mild fog of war like the early Ultima’s, but stear clear of the partical effects. If Inaria does well, then Inaria 2 can be a step further in technology, with better graphics and more effects.
Just tried the RC. Love the special effects, except for the Fog.
