The Order of the Stick

The Order of the Stick is a webcomic that has been running for about three years now. (And I just found out about it from Rob Fermier’s blog – thanks, Rob!) It started out as just a simple “make fun of the rules of D&D” comic – and it did its job very well. But as I read it, I was surprised to watch it grow out of that and into a pretty darn good general action/adventure/comedy comic set firmly inside the D&D universe.

One of the great things about The Order of the Stick is that all the characters know they are characters in a role playing game, but the entire story is told from their perspective – we never see the players who are presumably playing the characters or the GM who is presumably running the campaign. The characters all know how the D&D rules work and they know their own stats. They continually talk about failing Spot checks, rolling natural 20s and what Feats they should take for their next level. And the author, Rich Burlew, seems to know a whole lot about D&D. A whole lot. Reading the comic can actually help you figure out how some rules (like attacks of opportunity) work.

The other great thing about The Order of the Stick is that it’s drawn in a stick-figure style. This is great because it goes a long way to covering up the unbelievability of how RPGs are played – it doesn’t seem that weird when a character one hit point away from death is healed back up to full hit points instantly because all that really happens is that the red mark on his chest disappears and he stands up. If the toon were more realistic, it would actually be less believable. This is very, very important. The other benefit of the stick figure style is that Rich can give us a full page on every update which allows him to tell really big stories – and tell them he does!

The only downside is that I’d rate the strip PG-13 for violence, adult language and adult situations. So I’m not letting my daughter read it quite yet. But if you’re old enough and would like to read a great fantasy adventure comic, you really should give it a shot.

Viridian’s Video Blog, October 22, 2006

Sorry about the lack of a video blog last week; I was travelling to a friend’s wedding. This week I’ve got a special interview with an actual GIRL! Who plays GAMES! D00D!

Lee’s Wedding

This past weekend, one of my best friends got married.

Lee Gibson and I met at Origin Systems, where we were both testers. He can tell you anything you want to know about Wing Commander IV, having tested the PC, Mac and PC-DVD versions. He’s also a damn good Quake player. Some of my happiest memories of Origin are of me, him and Anthony Castoro playing multiplayer in the House of Cthon.

After we were both let go from Origin, we both found phone tech support jobs elsewhere. (I suppose I should thank Origin for giving me that useful skill, because it meant that I didn’t stay out of a job for long like I would have if all I had on my resume was “tester”.) He suggested I come over to where he was at Dun & Bradstreet, as it paid far better than MaxServ, which is where I ended up.

Thus we stayed in close contact and became even better friends. Finally he left Austin to go back to school and finally finish his aeronautical engineering degree (why yes, he is a rocket scientist). We kept in close touch using various IM programs.

Now, one thing I could never understand was why the poor guy couldn’t get married. I knew him personally, I knew he was sharp, funny and had a bright future, so it just astounded me when he would tell me of yet another flaky girl that he’d split up with.

Finally he met a nice girl named Barbara. From Portland, Oregon. Of course, given Lee’s history, I’m not surprised that he didn’t let that stop him. They continued their relationship using various IM programs.

And one day Lee went up there to see her and didn’t come back. Until it was time for the wedding, of course.

Now, Top Spin 2 had just wrapped the day before, and we’d been crunching rather a lot to get it done. And it’s a four-hour drive from Austin to Plano. I honestly wouldn’t have done it for anyone else.

But I’m so glad I went.

The wedding took place in Lee’s family church, the Custer Road United Methodist Church. The church itself was beautiful, with one of the most amazing stained-glass windows I’ve ever seen. The ceremony was absolutely wonderful – it served tradition well while still having a few laughs to break up the tension (at one point a bridesmaid and a groomsman went skipping down the ailse together).

One thing I noticed was that Barbara’s dress was white with a pattern of red roses on it in red thread. Lee was wearing a white vest with the same red rose pattern on it.

The pastor did one thing I’ve never seen before. At one point he made all of us, the entire congregation, stand up and pledge that we would do everything in our power to help Lee and Barbara in their journey through married life. I gladly said, “I will”.

And I finally saw my friend put the single part of his life behind him, and begin the part where he becomes a family man. I myself look back on the person I was when I was single and I don’t really recognize him. I wasn’t really me until I married Jamie.

And when we got to the reception, the wedding cake was white with that same red rose pattern on it in red frosting!

In this episode, I talk about how games don’t have to be so darn difficult and present some gameplay footage from Hit & Myth. And I actually kept the thing to under fifteen minutes this time!

Video Blog 3 successful!

In this blog I talk about how game development and game publishing work, tell two stories about game development, and even have a guest star at the end!

Edit: Google Video version is here. Gamespot’s player doesn’t seem to work well for non-Usanians. I’ll be uploading the Google Video version more promptly in the future.

Okay, let’s test something here…

Woohoo!

Well…

Except that the quality on the Google Video version is MUCH worse than the Gamespot one. Crud!

Straight Outta Lynwood

Weird Al‘s latest drops today, to use the vernacular. Best tracks, IMO: White & Nerdy, Pancreas, Virus Alert and Close But No Cigar.

And here it is.

If the above video doesn’t work well for you, here’s a Google Video version.

Stalked by Weird Al!

I’m pretty sure that Weird Al has been observing me secretly. Isn’t that illegal?

Heavy-A

The camera made me mad.
I’m 6’4″. I weigh over 300 pounds. I am a big dude.

I’m not just big, I’m wide. Even if I weren’t overweight I’d still take up a whole doorframe because of the width of my shoulders.

I also like to keep my hair real short because of how grey it is. Seeing a head full of grey hair in the mirror makes me sad, so I just cut it all off.

Plus I can do the growly voice.

Because of all this, I am constantly asked if I play football. At more than one party I have been mistaken for a security guard. I have been told that I have an intimidating presence.

But I’m not intimidating. I don’t have a violent nature. I love rainbows, and, and kittens! And small children! And…and pretty stuff! Architecture! And flowers! Lots of flowers!

Sometimes I actually like to embrace my largish nature, as evidenced by the picture above (which will go on my Aspyr badge).

But I’m really just a big fuzzy-wuzzy cuddly bear, dammit!

Congratulations to Brad and Debbie Wardell!

Brad Wardell is the founder of Stardock and the creator of the Galactic Civilizations series of games. He’s one of my favorite people, and just a few days ago he and his wife Debbie were blessed with their third child, a girl named Ashley. They already have two boys, so its good that their third was a girl…it guarantees that they will get the Full Parenting Experience 🙂

Congratulations, Brad and Debbie!
