Name That Game 18!

And now we’re back to evil. If you played this game, I feel sorry for you. Though not as sorry as if you’d played Noctropolis.

Mmmmm....tiles!

This was another game that EA foisted off onto us at Origin. I remember poor Janie Kivil getting an irate older man who complained that the last level of the game was impossible. Unfortunately there wasn’t anything she could do for him; that level was completely arcade-based and required the reflexes of a twelve-year-old on speed. Sometimes I think some designers feel like they’ve failed if players can actually complete their game.

Anyway, name and developer, please.

Name That Game 17!

Okay, I’m totally rule-breaking with this one. This is not a PC game.

I love adventure games!

I’m going to justify my actions by saying that while this is not a PC game, the developers that made this game went on to make some of the best-selling PC games ever, so this is a valid bit of their history.

Plus, this game rocked. I played it to death back in the Day.

Name and developer, please.

Name That Game 16!

I am continuing my kick of “easy games that are really good”. This particular series of games is one that I never got into myself but I know lots of people loved. I really should try it sometime…

Mmmmm....tiles!

Name and developer, please!

Name That Game 15!

This one should be no problem. I deliberately wanted to feature an excellent game today to counteract last week’s suckfest.

Polygons. The Final Frontier.

Enjoy! First person to post gets a free copy of this game! Not from me, of course.

Name That Game 14!

Here we go again. If anyone gets this one I’ll be very surprised.

Cold. Cold and dark. And it goes on forever.

And if you guess this game because you actually played it, I pity you. Really. I had to play it at Origin because I had to provide hints for it (so there’s a clue for you). Otherwise I’d have never touched it.

So have fun kids!

EDIT: I am so glad nobody got this game (except Ryan, who got it by Googling). The game was Noctropolis, an absolutely terrible graphic adventure released by EA. Noctropolis was supposed to be an “adult” game and it achieved that by being as juvenile as it possibly could. Blood? Yes! Boobs? Yes! Incomprehensible puzzles combined with pixel hunting? Yes!

So I’m going to call Ryan the winner here, but the truth is that by not playing this game, you’re all winners. Go you!

Hmmm…

For the last couple weeks, it feels like I’ve been forgetting something. Something I used to do…that got my readers involved with the site…

Oh. Oh, right. Well, better late than never, I suppose, so it’s finally time for…

Name That Game 13!

Oh! A platformer! I love platformers!

Again, no idea how difficult this one is going to be to get. I never actually played this game; it came out in one of my Dark Times (first year of college, I believe). I’m cheating slightly; this is actually a screenshot from the Atari ST version of this game. I felt the PC screenshot I found was too Google-able.

Enjoy!

Name That Game 12!

Crud, I forgot to post this yesterday.

Again, I don’t know how tough this one is going to be. I deliberately tried for something slightly easier, since last week’s was such death. But hell, I didn’t think last week’s was that tough…

I've got it! Super Monkey Ball!

Name and developer, please. Your reward? Oh, you want a reward? What, free amusement isn’t enough for you, you want even more?! I work and slave over a hot compiler all day long for you people, and you’re just never satisfied! Go to your room!

Name That Game 11!

Okay! We’re off the RPGs and onto action/adventure game hybrids!

This game is a personal favorite of mine; I played it all the way through from beginning to end. It was a very well-designed game with a huge world and a fascinating storyline. It helped that it was based on a series of books by a real author and that the author was intimately involved with the creation of the game. She even went so far as to say that the game is the true end to the story, rather than the one presented in her books.

Oh, that's definitely Quake. You can tell by the shape of the gibs.

Name and developer, please.

EDIT: Wow, I seem to have finally stumped you guys!

EDIT: Okay, I’m giving you guys until 12 PM Eastern and then I’m going to reveal. Warren, you are now allowed to guess, if you so desire.

EDIT: Okay. Wow. No one got it. The game is Below the Root, by Windham Classics. It’s based on the Green Sky books by Zilpha Keatley Snyder. In the last book of the series she had one of the main characters die, which she realized after the book was published was a mistake. So the plot of the game is to actually find out if this character is really dead, and rescue him if possible.

Name That Game 10!

Sorry about the lack of updates; I’ve been sick for about a week…and yes, that means I was sick over Thanksgiving, it was terrible.

Anyway, today’s entry comes from a suggestion from Ryan Clark.

Yes, it’s another RPG. Deal.

I know! Starbase Commander!

I’m cheating again; I’m using a much nicer-looking (and honestly, more recognizable) Commodore 64 screenshot than a DOS screenshot. But this game was available for DOS.

Name and developer, please! Bonus points if you can give me both names of this game.

And if anyone else has a suggestion, please feel free to send them in!

Name That Game 9!

Today’s game comes courtesy of Tom Mauer. Blame him. I personally had never seen this game before.

It's definitely one of the Tony Hawk games.

Name and developer, per usual. Reward? Uh…I’m kinda strapped for cash…but I’m totally good for it! Really! I’ll mail you a check next week!
